You are heading to a date, but something about the plan feels uncertain. Maybe you do not know the person well yet, maybe the setting feels isolated, or maybe your body is telling you to stay alert even if you cannot fully explain why.

What to remember todayA simple safety plan can make an uncertain date easier to navigate without pretending risk does not exist.

Pick a public place and keep your own transportation

Meet where other people are around and make sure you can leave on your own if you want to.

Relying on your own car, rideshare, or transit keeps your exit in your hands.

Share the plan with someone you trust

Tell a friend where you are going, who you are meeting, and about when you expect to be back.

If possible, share a check-in time so someone can notice if the date is not unfolding as expected.

Use a code word and know where to ask for help

A code word can let a friend know that you need support without alerting the other person.

If something feels wrong in the moment, staff, security, or emergency services are there for a reason. Asking for help is allowed.

A plan is not a guarantee, and it is never blame

Even careful planning cannot control every outcome.

If something still goes wrong, that does not mean you failed to prepare well enough. The blame stays with the person who caused harm.

Say it clearly and briefly

  • I’m meeting a date at this public place and will check in by 9:00.
  • I am leaving on my own, so I can head out whenever I want.
  • If I text this word, please call me back right away.

Responses that make things harder

  • Going somewhere isolated just to seem easygoing
  • Leaving your transportation plan in someone else’s hands
  • Treating safety prep as if it means you expect something bad

Before the date, write down your exit plan, your check-in time, and one person who can help if you need it.

Before you decide

  • Did I choose a public place?
  • Do I have my own way to leave?
  • Did I tell someone my plan and check-in time?
  • Do I know the code word and where to ask for help?
